Organization

Each National Committee is represented on the International Committee which meets once every four years. There are seven regions around the world and two representatives from each region are elected at this Quadrennial Conference to form the Executive Committee.

At each Quadrennial Conference of the World movement, suggestions for themes for future services are received, as are nominations for writing countries, usually from among those who have not already prepared a World Day of Prayer service. The International Committee decides on four themes and then allocates one of the chosen themes to a nominated country, ensuring as wide a regional variation in the writers as possible.

When the writing of the service is completed, it is then sent to the International Office in New York, along with graphics and explanatory information about the order of service plus music, background material on the writing country and Bible study notes and questions. All this material is put together in New York and sent out to each National Committee. It arrives about 18 months before the service is due to take place.

In Ireland as soon as the service has taken place one year, our editorial group starts to edit and prepare the next year’s service for use in the Republic. Each writing country produces an order of service which reflects the culture and ethos of that nation. Since this is a World movement and part of its aim is to tell each other about our different countries, so that our prayers can be more informed, we adhere to the World Day of Prayer policy of keeping as closely as possible to the original text of the service.

All this material is then sent to the printers and in October each year, a group of volunteers meets over two days to make up the orders requested by each local branch. These are then sent out to the local branch organisers.

Regional Meetings are held in as many venues as possible from late autumn until mid-February to provide a medium for local branches to network and share ideas and information. Three women from each Region represent their area at the Annual General Meeting.

Many local branches meet regularly throughout the year for Bible Study, discussion and prayer.
